Fire in bathroom forces middle school to evacuate, Charlotte Fire says

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools middle school evacuated Tuesday morning due to a fire in one of the bathrooms.

Around 7:30 a.m., Charlotte Fire said they were at Sedgefield Middle School after a toilet paper roll was set on fire.

Though firefighters quickly extinguished it, three adults were being evaluated for smoke inhalation, Charlotte Fire said.

The school was evacuated after the incident, firefighters said. Around 7:40 a.m., Charlotte Fire said the students were allowed back into the school.

CMS shared the following message with families about the incident:

“Hello Sedgefield Middle School families. This is Principal Miracle with some important information about an incident that happened today. The safety of our students is our top priority. This morning a small fire occurred in a student restroom.  Out of an abundance of caution the building was evacuated and the Charlotte Fire Department was called to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Fire Department officials gave an all clear and teaching and learning are now continuing as normal. No students or staff were injured. As a reminder we have a zero-tolerance policy for incidents that disrupt the learning environment and potentially jeopardize student and staff safety. Any student bringing a prohibited item on campus will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Remind your children of the consequences for bringing harmful items to school. Thank you for your support of Sedgefield Middle School.”
