1 dead, 3 hurt in 9-story apartment building fire in Northwest DC
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — DC Fire and EMS said a person died and three others were injured in a two-alarm fire in Northwest D.C. on Thursday morning.
The fire started in an apartment on the eighth floor of the nine-story senior apartment building Claridge Towers in the 1200 block of M St. NW. DC Fire and EMS said they found someone dead inside the apartment.

One neighbor living in the building named Tracy Smith put her life on the line to try to save others. Many seniors in the building have mobility issues and needed help to evacuate.
“I ran back in the building and got everybody off the 7th, 8th, 9th floor, everyone I could help,” said Smith. “This is a very scary thing. This is a tragedy.”
A spokesman for the department said medics took a firefighter and three other people to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
The firefighter made a mayday call and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Acting Fire Chief Andre Edwards said he’s doing alright and did the right thing by making the mayday call.

Another neighbor, Arlene Green, said she saw her neighbors being rescued through windows,
“The fire department’s ladder extension was right in front of my window and they told me to get out of the building,” Green told DC News Now.
Crews had the fire under control by 9:45 a.m. The cause of the fire remains unclear.
Roads in the area have since reopened.
