Fire breaks out in downtown San Diego home: SDFD

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A fire erupted at a downtown San Diego residence Tuesday morning after an apparent fight between two squatters on the property, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.

According to SDFD, the fire broke out around 7:42 a.m. in the 250 block of 17th Street, nearby a high-rise in between the Interstate 5 and Petco Park Tailgate Parking Lot. The first crews arrived minutes later at 7:46 a.m. Nobody was inside the home when they arrived.

A total of 46 personnel were dispatched to the scene, including five engines and two trucks. The San Diego Police Department’s Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) was also called.

As of 11 a.m., crews were released from the scene. An estimated time of control has not been provided and no injuries have been reported.

Road closures were put in place along K Street through downtown from 16th to 17th Streets while crews worked to put out the flames, according to SDFD.

SDFD crews on scene told FOX 5 that the cause of the fire is believed to have been from a fight between squatters, who the homeowners allow to dwell on one of the residence’s floors.

No additional information was immediately available.
