Fire breaks out after shelling in eastern Ukraine

STORY: City residents heard a series of loud explosions that lasted for several hours. Local authorities announced an evacuation.

"They hit a warehouse (ammunition depot)," Nadezhda, a Shakhtarsk resident, told Reuters. "Then explosions began. It was exploding so badly," she added.

Shakhtarsk, 35 miles east of the city of Donetsk, came under the control of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic after Russia annexed the peninsula of Crimea in 2014.
