DALLAS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Firefighters are battling a large fire in Dallas, marking the third major brush fire in the greater Charlotte area on Monday.

Dallas Volunteer Fire Department Chief Earl Withers III says crews are fighting a 4-5 acre fire near the Gaston County Yard Waste Facility and Hardin Recycling & Transfer. This is off Philadelphia Church Road.

Officials say it is possible that the fire started from mulch; however, the incident is still under investigation.

Six different fire departments are fighting the blaze and more help has been requested.

The area is heavily wooded, making it difficult for crews to get to hot spots, Chief Withers says. Currently, smaller brush trucks are carrying a few hundred gallons of water into the woods, emptying their tanks in the fight and exiting the woods to refill their tanks.

A bulldozer is also clearing the area and crews are working to establish a firebreak.
