GREEN BAY - A fire Tuesday morning caused an estimated $1 million damage at an east-side business that sells used conveyors and other warehouse equipment.

The blaze at Packer City Sales at 1124 N. Baird St. was reported at 5:05 a.m. The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy, black smoke.

Flames were soon visible on the west side of the building. The roof soon began sagging, prompting firefighters to use a defensive approach, Battalion Chief Tony Piontek said.

Green Bay fire officials were assisted by seven other nearby departments. Some responded to the scene; others staffed Green Bay fire stations. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 2½ hours

One firefighter was treated at the scene, then taken to a city hospital. No civilians were injured.

Assisting were Ashwaubenon Public Safety, and fire departments from De Pere, Howard, Lawrence, New Franken, Pulaski Tri-County and Suamico.
