A Dayton home was heavily damaged Friday after a fire broke out inside.

Crews were called out to the first block of S. Moss Ave around 1:20 p.m. on reports of a fire, according to initial reports.

David Grubb, Dayton Fire Department District Chief, told News Center 7 that a passerby saw smoke and called it in.

When crews arrived on scene, the occupant of the house was outside. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out, but extensive damage was done.

Video from the scene showed flames on the front porch and inside the front door.

Grubb said the homeowner said he woke up and smelled smoke. Firefights didn’t hear any kind of smoke detectors going off inside of the house, so its unknown if the homeowner had any.

“If anything we want to stress the importance of [having working smoke detectors],” Grubb said. “This could have been bad.”

No injuries were reported and the Red Cross was called to assist the homeowner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
