Fire causes extensive damage to Iowa City church on American Legion Road early Saturday

Iowa City and West Branch fire departments worked early Saturday as a fire engulfed a church on American Legion Road.

According to the Iowa City police activity log, firefighters responded to the call at 4:23 a.m.

A strong storm that caused flash flood warnings and produced lightning moved through the region overnight.

Iowa City Church of Christ is a non-denominational Christian church located at 4643 American Legion Road in Johnson County on the east side of Iowa City.

State Fire Marshal Ron Humphrey, special agent in charge, said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The church shared an update to its Facebook page Saturday morning that it plans to meet for a prayer service Sunday at 10 a.m. in the parking lot or nearby at the Legacy Retirement Community.

"Please be praying for our church," the post read.
