Fire Crews Battle Blaze at Oil Factory in Israel's Haifa Port

Fire crews battled a blaze at an oil-storage facility in the Haifa Bay Industrial Plant in Israel on September 5, the country’s ministry of environment said.

A video posted to Facebook showed crews fighting the warehouse fire, from which black smoke was billowing. An excavator can also be seen shoveling sand toward the site of the fire.

The Jerusalem Post said the warehouse stored 80 metric tons of vegetable oil. At least 36 firefighting teams were battling the fire, media reported.

The ministry of environment said in the Facebook post that the roof of the warehouse was made of asbestos.

Media cited Haifa firefighting unit commander Hezi Levi as saying, "other facilities in the area have been evacuated.

“Once the fire is put out, we will have to clean the oil off the roads and remove the asbestos,” Levi is quoted as saying. Credit: Jawad Khourni, Ministry of the Environment via Storyful
