Fire crews rescue child from Fayetteville storm drain Friday

Rescue crews pulled a child out of a drain hole on Bunce Road home Friday afternoon, the Fayetteville Fire Department said.

The child fell 15 feet into a hole in a ditch along the side of the road in front of his house about 4:30 p.m., said Fayetteville Fire Capt. Don Tschida.

He said the department's technical rescue team had to conduct a "confined space entry" into the hole to extract the boy, who he estimated to be between 4 and 5 years old.

The child was rescued within 45 minutes and was being evaluated by EMS, Tschida said. He said the drain hole should have had a cover on it. It was not immediately known how the boy fell inside.
