Fire damages historic north Louisiana church Sunday morning

A historic site in Gilliam, Louisiana, sustained heavy damage after a fire Sunday morning.

Caddo Fire District 7 was dispatched just after 9 a.m. Aug. 6 to Justice Chapel Baptist Church on Hwy 3049.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large fire coming from the office area of the church.

According to a representative with District 7, the fire was under control within an hour, and firefighters were able to contain the fire to the office area. The chapel did not sustain any fire damage.

Justice Chapel Baptist Church is a historic site, built in 1913. According to the historic site plaque, Justice Chapel Baptist Church was organized in 1894, and members of the congregation built a brush harbor for worship services prior to the present-day structure.

Today, the congregation still meets in the chapel built in 1913.
