Aug. 6—EAST LYME — A fire on Saturday damaged a home and destroyed a shed at 20 Bishops Bay Road in Niantic.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was first reported at 11:20 a.m. when black smoke could be seen billowing from the area of the two-story home, which overlooks the Niantic River.
Niantic Fire Department Chief Jim Barone said firefighters arrived to find the detached shed adjacent to the house fully engulfed in flames. The fire had extended onto the side and into the eaves and upstairs of the home.
He said fire crews were able to stop the spread of the fire and limit the amount of damage. A cat found inside the home was being rehabbed on scene, he said.
Because of the extremely high temperatures, Barone said he had called on additional manpower from mutual aid departments. Firefighters, working in rotations, included personnel from Old Saybrook, Flanders, Oswegatchie and Jordan fire departments.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Public records show the home is owned by Douglas and Lynnae Lajoie. The Red Cross said it was providing emergency assistance to the occupants of the home.
