Fire destroys barn in town of Oconto

OCONTO – Fire destroyed a barn in the town of Oconto on July 4.

The fire in the 2700 block of Sherman Road, about 2 miles northeast of the city, was reported about 6:37 a.m. by an occupant of camper parked near the barn.

The person had been awakened by the sound of ash hitting the top of his camper, said Oconto Fire-Rescue Lt. John Floyd.

Fire department crews arrived to find a large brick and metal barn burning.

The barn was not occupied or in operation, Floyd said, and contained only some equipment and hay bales.

Firefighters used multiple hose lines and an estimated 90,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.

Once the roof collapsed, an excavator was called to the scene to remove hay and metal roofing to extinguish remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Floyd said.

Three engines, one ladder, four tenders, two ambulances, one rescue truck and one command vehicle responded to the scene along with 25 fire and rescue personnel.

OFRD was assisted on scene by fire departments from Oconto Falls, Little River and Pensaukee.

Also responding were Pensaukee First Responders, Oconto County Emergency Management, Oconto County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and Duame Sand & Gravel.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

OFRD responded to two unrelated ambulance calls during the fire.
