Firefighters were dispatched around 3:07 p.m. to 20 E. Mulberry Street on initial reports of a house fire, Springfield Fire wrote on social media.

When firefighters arrived, heavy fire was found already venting out the windows and had taken control of the second floor and attic space.

Initial attempts were made for an aggressive attack inside the house, but firefighters had to leave because the stairs were badly damaged.

Springfield Fire said several pets were inside the building at the time of the fire but got rescued.
