Fire destroys mobile home Wednesday evening

A mobile home at Lakeside Estates is a total loss Thursday morning following a house fire.

Aberdeen Fire & Rescue was called to 115 First Curve at Lakeside Estates at 8:15 a.m. and battled the blaze until about 2:30 a.m.

The single-side mobile home had a heavily involved fire when firefighters arrived, according to a news release from Aberdeen Fire & Rescue.

Battalion Chief Michael Roemmich said Aberdeen Fire & Rescue initially didn't know if anyone was in the home, but later confirmed no one was inside.

"We determined early on it was a defensive fire," he said.

Firefighters focused their efforts on containing the fire from the outside, he said and nearby homes were not at risk.

"We were really lucky the house stood off by itself," he said noting that both wind direction and mild winds worked in their favor, although temperatures around 10 degrees meant challenges as well, including icy conditions on the road from the water used to fight the fire.

The cause of a mobile home fire Wednesday evening remains under investigation by the Aberdeen Fire Marshall and the state Fire Marshall's office.

The Aberdeen Rural Fire Department assisted in providing additional water supply to fight the fire and Brown County Emergency Management brought its response trailer to support firefighters in the cold temperatures.

Roemmich said a couple firefighters did end up with minor injuries related to slips and falls on the ice.

The Lakeside Estates fire call was one of two fire calls Wednesday evening. Roemmich said the first call, in the 500 block of South Congress Street, was a small garage fire that was out before firefighters arrived.
