INDIAN RIVER — Tuscarora Township firefighters worked throughout the night on Nov. 19 to put out a fire that decimated Pat and Gary’s party store at 3758 S. Straits Hwy in Indian River.

The store’s inventory of groceries, beer, wine, Lotto tickets, liquor and sporting goods went up in flames around midnight on Saturday and the fire raged for several hours.

Assistance was called in from the surrounding community fire departments of Inverness, Forest Waverly, Topinabee, Wolverine and Alanson.

“We were asking for tankers for water,” said Tuscarora Township’s Fire Chief Dave Carpenter.

It took 100,000 gallons of water from the combined fire departments to finally extinguish the flames, according to Carpenter.

The only injury was to a Tuscarora Township firefighter who needed a few stitches after being cut on glass at the site, said Carpenter.

What caused the fire is still under investigation.

A YouTube video from Paul Sacco was posted soon after the event. It shows the Tuscarora firefighters, along with those from the other communities, working to put out the blaze.

The site was cleared by Saturday morning, however it reignited around 10 or 11 a.m., according to Carpenter.
