BREMERTON – A three-story residence near the intersection of Hewitt Avenue and Burwell Street was destroyed in a fire Thursday.

Crews were called to the blaze shortly after 4:30 a.m., and when they arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames, said Bremerton Fire Department Assistant Chief John Payne. The home, which Payne said had been vacant for a while, eventually collapsed. No injuries were reported.

The fire burned "very, very hot" and damaged nearby structures, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading, Payne said. The cause of the fire was not known Thursday afternoon.

"There was nothing we could do to stop it," Payne said. "The goal was to contain it to just that building, and we were able to do that with just some siding damage to both homes on either side of it."

Anyone with information, photos or videos from the fire may contact Bremerton Fire Marshal Mike Six at Michael.Six@ci.bremerton.wa.us.
