Fire in East Lyme displaces two people

Aug. 13—EAST LYME — A fire in a residential area on Webster Road on Friday night displaced two adults.

The Red Cross is assisting the two adults, which they referred to as "a family," according to a news release issued Saturday. Flanders Fire Department confirmed that there was a fire, but did not release any other details, including whether anyone was injured or the extent of damage to the building. Niantic Fire Department did not answer a request for comment.

"On Friday 12, August Flanders and Niantic Fire Departments operated at a property on Webster Road," Flanders Fire Department wrote in a post on its Facebook page Saturday morning. "Following an initial report of an ... alarm activation ... smoke ... was found in the attic, which was quickly dealt with. Units were clear of the scene after approximately two hours."

Aside from finding the displaced people a place to stay, the Red Cross provided them with "information helpful to families recovering from a fire" and gave them "comfort kits" containing toiletries and personal care items.

"Those affected will connect with Red Cross case workers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan," The Red Cross added in its news release.

This is a developing story.
