Fire ignites at West Wind drive-in movie theaters, Sacramento Metro Fire says

A fire burned part of the West Wind drive-in movie theaters near Rancho Cordova on Sunday morning, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Capt. Parker Wilbourn said the roundhouse building at West Wind includes concessions on the ground floor and the projection room above. The fire started in the roundhouse just before 7 a.m.

The concessions area was significantly damaged, Wilbourn said, but the projection room — including several projectors worth about $150,000 each — was spared. The office on the first floor was also saved.

But, “everything as far as the kitchen is a total loss,” he said.

Wilbourn described the theater as “a staple of the area,” and said it is planning on reopening.

“They just won’t have a concessions stand,” he said.

A message on the theater’s website said it is “temporarily closed due to unforeseen circumstances,” and no showtimes are listed for this week. In a Facebook post, West Wind said it would be contacting customers who had tickets for an upcoming show to offer refunds.

The theater is considering ways to work around the damage to the building, including potentially having guests bring their own snacks, according to Wilbourn. Representatives of the theater were unavailable by phone.
