Fire off Shaw Mill Road in Fayetteville expected to burn for days

A wildfire in a pile of railroad ties off Shaw Mill Road is proving difficult for fire crews to extinguish and is expected to burn for days, a fire official said.

Fayetteville Fire Battalion Chief Bryan Carter said in a news release that firefighters were dispatched about 11 p.m. Sunday, but "the size and configuration, along with access restraints are preventing crews from being able to extinguish the fire as they normally would." He said the fire will be visible from the surrounding area in the coming days.

Shaw Mill Road is closed from Rosehill Road to Meharry Drive. Residents who live in the neighborhood close to Murchison Road can access their homes from Murchison, Carter said.

Fire crews monitored the fire and surrounding areas throughout the night, the release said.
