Fire rips through historic blimp hangar seen in ‘Star Trek,’ California officials say
Flames destroyed a historic blimp hangar featured in “The X-Files” and “Star Trek” in Tustin, California firefighters reported.
The Tustin Hangars at the former Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, built in 1942, are 17 stories high, over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, according to Tustin Legacy.
A three-alarm fire broke out in the north hangar overnight Monday, Nov. 6, the Orange County Fire Authority reported on Twitter, now rebranded as X.
After battling the blaze with a helicopter, firefighters decided to let the hangar collapse, a later post said.
“Due to the dynamic nature of the fire, and the imminent danger of collapse, we have determined the most operationally sound method is to allow the structure to collapse, at which point ground crews can move in closer, and aggressively work to extinguish the fire,” firefighters wrote.
Sections of the hangar continued to collapse Tuesday, Nov. 7, monitored by firefighters, another post read.
“It’s so sad,” resident Connor Ruffalo told KTTV. “This is such a spectacle. I have no idea when I’ll see something like this again.”
Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles, according to the station.
The mammoth hangars have been featured in film and television productions including “Star Trek,” “Pearl Harbor,” “The X-Files,” “JAG” and “Austin Powers,” Tustin Legacy said.
