Fire from ruptured gas line creates black plume

EAST SPARTA, Ohio (WJW) — A thick, black plume could be seen rising above a gas line that ruptured and caught fire on Wednesday morning.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office reported numerous 911 calls about a possible explosion and fire just before 11 a.m. Deputies responded to the 9100 block of Briggle Avenue Southwest in Pike Township to assist East Sparta volunteer firefighters by directing traffic.

The area along Briggle Avenue Southwest between Downing Road and Ullet Street Southwest was closed for about an hour.

East Sparta Fire Department just after noon on Wednesday reported the fire was under control and that the gas company, Marathon Petroleum, was on scene. The roadway was then reopened.

“Everyone is going home safe,” reads a Wednesday afternoon Facebook post.

No further details were available on Wednesday afternoon. FOX 8 News has reached out to the fire department for more information.

“This is a great testament to how we as a community come together to ensure the safety of Stark County,” Sheriff George Maier is quoted in a news release. “I am proud of the swift response and teamwork displayed by our deputies, the East Sparta Volunteer Fire Department, Marathon Petroleum, and others involved. It’s through collaboration like this that we can continue to keep Stark County safe.”
