Fire sends two people to hospital

Apr. 29—WILLIMANTIC — Two residents went to the hospital following a fire at Ivy Gardens apartments early Thursday morning.

According to Willimantic Fire Chief Marc Scrivener's report, the fire was reported at 2: 52 a. m. at 84 Ash St. Scrivener said there was a report of smoke coming from a basement window.

He said upon arrival, firefighters discovered the fire was confined to the room it originated in, which appeared to be a living room.

Scrivener said personnel declared the fire was knocked down at 3:11 a.m. and firefighters declared the incident was under control at 3:31 a.m.

A Columbia ambulance transported a female resident who had anxiety and suffered from smoke inhalation to Windham Community Memorial Hospital.

A male patient was evaluated by Scotland Fire Department personnel for smoke inhalation.

Scrivener said he refused transport by ambulance and transported himself to the hospital instead. He said UConn sent a Rapid Intervention team in their tower truck and Mansfield sent a fire engine. North Windham and Scotland firefighters covered the Willimantic station, with an ambulance from Scotland on standby.

Scrivener said all mutual aid was released by 4:13 a.m. and the last Willimantic Fire Department personnel left at 4: 51 a. m. He said the scene was turned over to building maintenance personnel.

Windham Fire Marshal Michael Licata could not be reached for comment on the cause and origin of the fire.
