KEYPORT — An elderly couple was killed when a fire ripped through a two-and-a-half-story, wood-frame home on Fulton Street in the borough early Thursday, investigators said.

A spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the deaths on Friday but declined to offer the identities or ages of the victims out of respect for their families.

The fire was reported shortly after midnight Thursday, drawing to the scene Keyport police, rescuers and borough fire companies who were joined by firefighters from surrounding towns. The firefighters "were able to control the fire enough to ensure no neighboring houses were affected," the Keyport Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Monmouth County Fire Marshal were at the scene. Authorities said there was nothing suspicious about the blaze.
