PRINCE GEORGE – State police say a blown tire caused a fire truck in transit from New York to Georgia to overturn on southbound Interstate 95 early Friday night, injuring two people and slowing traffic for a few hours.

The wreck happened around 6 p.m. near Carson, state police said.

The truck, a 1999 Spartan, had been purchased by the Waynesville, Georgia Fire Department from Granville, New York, and was being driven home when the crash happened. State Police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said a rear tire blew on the truck, causing the driver to lose control.

Shehan said the truck ran into the median, then back onto the highway when it flipped over on the driver’s side.

The driver and passenger, both from Brunswick, Georgia, were thrown from the truck. The driver, a 34-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, a 28-year-old woman, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

The right lane and shoulder of I-95 were closed while crews cleaned up the scene.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
