YARMOUTH — A fire on New Year’s Eve caused extensive damage to the second floor of a two-story building in South Yarmouth, said Yarmouth fire Lieutenant Chris McMahon.

Yarmouth fire responded to 12 Salt WorksLane after having received a call at 5:59 p.m. on Friday.

Upon arrival, smoke could be seen coming from the eaves of the building. Police officers were already on scene and told the fire department that there was no fire on the first floor.

Firefighters entered the building and saw that the second floor had fire, which had also made its way to the attic. There was no one in the building at the time of the fire.

Although the fire was extinguished quickly, there were some stubborn hotspots which took a while to take care of, said McMahon. The entire fire was put out in about one hour.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
