A firefighter is recovering in Phoenix from burns he sustained while responding to a multiple-structure fire on Wednesday afternoon in the Gila County town of Miami.

Suffering burns to 40% of his body, the Tri-City Fire District firefighter is currently at a Phoenix hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to Miami Town Manager Alexis Rivera. No other information on the firefighter was immediately available.

The fire broke out about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, devastating four empty buildings on the 600 block of Live Oak Street, which converts into U.S. 60, according to Rivera. The fire was contained sometime past 5 p.m., with the freeway reopened about 10:30 p.m., he said.

Another firefighter suffered heat exhaustion but was back to work by Friday, according to Rivera.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Rivera said.

One of the structures destroyed by the fire was built in 1902, Rivera said.
