Somerset Collection fire extinguished, no injuries reported
A fire in a restaurant kitchen at The Somerset Collection in Troy Monday evening sparked a partial evacuation and drew dozens of area firefighters.
Firefighters got the call at 4:52 p.m. and arrived quickly to battle the blaze and extinguished the fire by 6:25 p.m., the Troy Fire Department said. Firefighters were still working on removing smoke.
Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen of the Capital Grille on the mall's north side, and the flames spread to the roof through the ventilation system.
Around 60-70 firefighters came to help out, said Fire Department Lieutenant Dan Mahrle.
The east end of Somerset North was evacuated, and there were no reported injuries. The fire department will conduct a full investigation once the smoke clears.
Somerset spokesman Peter Van Dyke said some sections of the mall were temporarily closed, but the rest remained open.
Police officers were blocking doors to part of Somerset North.
Marquia Potter, 37, was in Macy's when the fire started.
“People were yelling 'Fire!' and running out of the building. You could see smoke inside the Macy’s on the first floor.”
