Firefighters battle fire in barn where about 70 cows were kept

Cedar Ridge Road north of Williamsport was closed Thursday afternoon because of a large barn fire off the road, according to a Washington County 911 supervisor.

It appears work was being conducted on the roof of the structure when a fire — which might have been electrical in nature — started, the supervisor said. About 70 cows were inside the barn and there was initial concern that a couple of them might have been electrocuted, the supervisor said.

Otherwise, it appears there was no large-scale loss of livestock.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m., and about 25 fire units battled the blaze.

Cedar Ridge Road, which extends between Clear Spring Road and U.S. 40, was to be closed for an extended period, and authorities worked with Washington County Public Schools to iron out details of student transportation routes that might be affected, the supervisor said.

Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Co. was the primary company in charge.
