Just before 3 p.m., Fairborn fire crews were called to the 400 block of Dayton Drive to reports of a fire.

Fairborn Fire Chief Ryan Williams described battling the large fire as “difficult” as he said many things were stacked against them.

“Between the weather, size of the building and multiple fires going on in the Miami Valley, it makes for a really difficult situation,” Williams said.

It took firefighters over three hours to get the fire under control.

While all families made it safely out of the complex, Williams suspects not all of their pets did.

Firefighters had to attack the fire from the outside due to the strength of the fire and the roof of the building starting to collapse.

“When you have a building like this and you can see that it’s starting to collapse that’s why we don’t put firefighters in there, so we’re going to make it safe,” Williams said.

Neighbors passed out water to families, police, and fire crews on the scene — something Williams said this community is known for.

“I’d like to say I’m surprised but I never am by how this community comes out and takes care of their fire department. We’ve been provided Gatorade, water and people have come out of their homes and offered up their restrooms,” he said.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist those displaced.

Investigators are still working to learn what caused the fire.
