Firefighters battle four-alarm fire at old mill building in Taunton

An old Taunton mill building caught fire early Saturday morning, working its way up to a 4-alarm fire.

The fire started around 4 a.m. Saturday inside the 29,000-square-foot mill building that was built in 1900 on Spring Lane. Fire officials told Boston 25 News the building used to be a music studio in town but has since been turned into apartments and small businesses.

Firefighters from several departments banded together in an attempt to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

“Additional alarms were struck as the fire spread, and firefighters were forced to evacuate the building and begin an exterior attack on the fire,” according to Taunton Fire Chief. “The building’s location adjacent to the Mill River, as well as fire conditions, made fully accessing the building difficult.”

There were no injuries, according to officials.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 12:30 p.m., but companies are expected to remain on the scene for hours wetting down and overhauling the building. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
