When firefighters arrived, they found the tenants had evacuated on their own. No one was found inside. The tenants will have to stay elsewhere. The Red Cross offered to find them alternative housing.

Reed said most of the first floor and much of the second floor sustained significant damage.

Reed said the owner of Taggarts offered firefighters coffee and provided a warm place for the home's occupants to take refuge from the morning chill as the firefighters fought the blaze.

The fire was under control by 8:53 a.m.

Reed said the fire department's Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating what caused the fire. He did not yet have a damage estimate.
