Firefighters Battle Kras Fire Blaze in Southwestern Slovenia

Firefighters continued to battle the growing Kras Fire in Kostanjevica na Krasu, Slovenia, July 22, footage online shows.

Video posted to Facebook by Klemen Gorup shows firefighters working through smoke to contain the flames, as an air unit drops flame retardant from above.

According to the official STA news agency the fire that had been raging for 10 days is now under control. Defence Minister Marjan Šarec thanked the 2,000 people actively involved in the efforts to put out the fire.

Slovenia Civil Protection said 1,500 firefighters have been fighting the blaze, aided by the Slovenian army and police, as well as air units from Austria, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Italy, and Romania.
