BRIDGEWATER - Volunteer firefighters are battling a brush fire in the area of Long Road in the Martinsville section of the township.

Multiple fire companies have responded to the scene on a day of gusty winds and near record-breaking temperatures, according to township police.

Smoke from the fire could be seen in downtown Somerville.

Preliminary reports indicate that the New Jersey Forest Fire Service will be dropping water from an airplane onto the fire on the Second Ridge of the Watchung Mountains off Washington Valley Road.

The dry and unseasonably dry weather has sparked major brush fires throughout New Jersey, with large blazes being reported today in Passaic County and the Pine Barrens.
