The Exeter Fire Department was one of several Seacoast departments that responded. The department reported on its Facebook page it joined firefighters from several communities who assisted battling the fire "involving multiple oil tankers."

"Exeter firefighters along with crews from several communities, continue to work the scene of a massive fire involving three oil tankers and a tractor-trailer at North Atlantic Fuels in Epping," the department posted at 6:15 p.m. "The crash truck from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has arrived to provide fire suppression with foam along with the Southeast HAZMAT team with 500 gallons of foam. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported."

At 7 p.m., the department reported the fire was under control.

Depot Road was closed during the incident, according to police.

Durham Town Administrator Todd Selig said the University of New Hampshire "shut down the water treatment plant on the Lamprey River in an abundance of caution to ensure we do not withdraw any fuel or foam contaminated water."

Selig said Durham and UNH were watching the impact of the fire closely to ensure protection of the water system.

"All drainage in that area goes to the Lamprey," he said. "The water system will be on our Spruce Hole Well and the Oyster River until (Durham's public works staff and UNH) better understand the situation and contamination risk."

He called the action, "another great example of the benefit of multiple water sources and Durham and UNH working together."
