Body found after fire at abandoned Desert Hot Springs hotel

A body was found at the scene of a fire at an abandoned Desert Hot Springs hotel on Thursday morning, police said.

CAL Fire got the call at 6:39 a.m. for the fire at 5th Street and Ocotillo Road. Firefighters saw two large hotel buildings on fire, each approximately 40% involved, according to CAL Fire's Twitter page. By 8:04 a.m., the fire was contained.

CAL Fire said the cause was under investigation.

Detective Sgt. Christopher Saucier with Desert Hot Springs police said the fire was at the Sahara hotel, which has had several fires in the past. He said homeless people had been known to stay there, though officers "haven't run into many people there recently."

Police believe the victim was a woman, Saucier said. He said detectives believe her death was not suspicious and was a result of the fire. No other information was immediately available.
