Firefighters from four counties battle 'significant' scrap metal fire near State 42
Firefighters from 40 departments across four counties battled a "significant" scrap metal fire near a processing facility on State 42 Saturday afternoon in Meeme, located in Manitowoc County, according to the Cleveland Fire Department.
The fire department was dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday for a report of flames and heavy smoke. Once firefighters arrived, they called for assistance from other departments.
The fire department said 40 teams and more than 90 first responders from Manitowoc, Brown, Sheboygan and Calumet Counties assisted with battling the blaze, which was located in a scrap pile near the facility at 14520 Pioneer Road in Meeme.
The fire was contained to the scrap pile and kept from spreading to nearby buildings. It was finally extinguished shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, the fire department said.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is undetermined.
