First responders in the Tuscarawas Valley dealt with frigid temperatures and icy conditions during the Christmas holiday weekend as they battled fires and handled other accidents.

On Monday morning, firefighters were called to a two-story residence at 405 N. Cross St. on a report of smoke in the building, according to Dover fire Lt. A.J. Moore. "We found smoke coming from the gable vent and also seeping through the slate roof."

Crews found fire in the second story, which they soon extinguished. Damage was mainly on the second floor, though there was some water damage to the first floor.

The family was outside when firefighters arrived. No one was injured.

Dover was assisted by firefighters from New Philadelphia and Bolivar, as well as Smith Ambulance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

On Sunday afternoon, crews responded to a report of a vehicle that had rolled over into a creek near Tappan Dam in Harrison County. All four of those inside were out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived, according to the Bowerston Volunteer Fire Department.

All of the occupants were treated for injuries and exposure to the cold and then transported to area hospitals.

Also responding were firefighters form Deersville, Freeport, Hopedale, Tappan, Tippecanoe and Uhrichsville.

On Saturday morning, firefighters were called to 4316 Murray Road in Dover Township when a passerby spotted fire coming from an outbuilding used as a garage and a recording studio.

"When we got there, there was fire showing through the roof," said Dover fire Capt. Michael Mossor.

The building was a total loss. Three classic cars and lots of recording and radio equipment were destroyed. Mossor estimated the loss at around $300,000.

No one was injured.

The weather that morning posed a problem, with temperatures below zero. "We had to fight the cold and the wind," he said.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from New Philadelphia, Sugarcreek, Wayne Township, York Township, Bolivar and Strasburg, as well as Smith Ambulance.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
