Firefighters rescue worker from Hempfield roof

Jul. 6—Local firefighters came to the rescue Thursday evening when a worker became stranded on the roof of a three-story building in Hempfield.

The man, who was installing gutter guards, became dehydrated and was unable to descend from the roof by himself, according to Dave Vinkler, captain of the Hempfield No. 2 and West Point fire departments.

"He was conscious and alert, but he had severe dehydration due to the heat and working in the sun all day," Vinkler said.

Firefighters responded at about 6 p.m. to the 600 block of Westchester Drive.

They placed the man in a basket-style litter and lowered him with the help of a ladder truck from the Dryridge Fire Department in neighboring Unity, Vinkler said.

The man was taken by Mutual Aid Ambulance Service to Westmoreland Hospital.

Crews from Southwest Greensburg Fire Department also assisted.
