Firefighters respond to fire alarm at Shaler Area High School, find water leak from broken sprinkler

Shaler Area High School students are currently out on winter break, but over the weekend, some first responders took their place in the hallways, when they cleaned up a mess caused by a broken sprinkler line.

Bauerstown Volunteer Firefighters were called to the school Saturday night in response to the break.

District officials believe it was caused by the frigid weather conditions over the weekend.

Firefighters spent multiple hours helping to clean up the soggy mess and patch up impacted water and electrical lines

In a statement, Shaler Area School District superintendent Dr. Sean Aiken said, “The high school building had a water flow alarm issue and the sprinkler system experienced a leak. … At this time, it is expected that damage from the sprinkler leak is confined to one area.”

The district did not provide an estimate on how much damage was caused or a timeline for cleanup.

Students are set to return from break on Jan. 2.
