Firefighters Respond to Flames Engulfing Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral

Fire officials in Paris, France, responded to a fire at the city’s Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday evening, April 15, after flames engulfed the church’s roof and spire.

A video posted by France’s Interior Ministry showed firefighters battling the blaze. Flames could be seen leaping from the building as well as an adjacent scaffolding. In their tweet, the Ministry said forces had secured a perimeter and had been fighting the fire for three hours.

According to AFP, citing firefighters, the fire was “potentially related” to renovation work on the building.

In a tweet, US President Trump remarked that water tankers might have been used to contain the flames. France’s Civil Security agency said “water-bombing aircrafts” could not be used in the effort without risking the collapse of the entire structure. Credit: Ministère de l’Intérieur via Storyful
