UPDATE: One dead in Shelby Co. train vs. car crash
Update at 1:55 p.m.
SHELBY COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police has confirmed that a man from Sigel died in Wednesday night’s train vs. car crash.
The crash happened between Sigel and Neoga on an unnamed gravel road connecting U.S. Route 45 to a power substation. County Road 400N is the closest paved road.

Officials said a 2005 Buick Le Sabre was driving eastbound away from the substation when it was hit in the passenger side by a northbound Amtrak passenger train. The driver of the Buick – 38-year-old Joseph G. Garrett – was pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation.
SHELBY COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Firefighters from two Central Illinois volunteer fire departments responded to a train vs. car crash in Shelby County Wednesday evening.
The Neoga Fire Protection District and the Sigel Fire Department were both called to a rural location near the intersection of U.S. Route 45 and County Road 400N at 6:20 p.m. They didn’t provide many details about the crash itself, but said a medical flight helicopter was requested due to its nature.
There is no word yet on injuries and how severe they may be.
U.S. Route 45 was shut down for over seven hours as emergency personnel responded and as law enforcement investigated. The highway reopened at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The investigation is ongoing. WCIA has reached out to the Illinois State Police and Shelby County authorities to learn more about the crash and is awaiting responses.
