“I was in my room, and I heard some commotion going on, some hollering. So I got up and opened the door up. I smelled smoke, seen smoke, came running out and running down, and there was a room on fire,” Randall Waggoner said.

“My first reaction was to get the people in the room out, and that’s what I ran upstairs to do,” he said. “Thank God that they’re safe and the stuff in the room can be replaced. A life can’t.”

Alton Trahan with the Lafayette Fire Department said firefighters responded just after 5 p.m. When they arrived, smoke was coming out of an upstairs bedroom. Trahan said the fire may been caused by cigarettes or matches.

“Once we did the investigation, we determined the fire originated in the bathroom. So we’re kind of looking at smoking material perhaps because there’s nothing else there beside a human being doing something inside the bathroom. So, everything is safe right now. Fortunately, that was the only room that was damaged,” Trahan added.
