Firefly Lane season 2 spoilers follow.

Netflix's Firefly Lane – an adaptation of the book of the same name by Kristin Hannah, starring TV royalty Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke – is back for season two, but this new chapter will unfortunately be the last we'll see of life-long besties Kate and Tully because the show is officially ending. We know. We grieve.

The final season has been split into two parts (something Netflix shows have apparently become accustomed to in recent months), with part one dropping on the streamer on December 2 and finally revealing why Kate and Tully's seemingly unbreakable friendship turned sour in the season one finale.

It also left us on another major cliffhanger, so join us here at Digital Spy as we tell you everything you need to know about part two.

Firefly Lane just wouldn't work without its two leading ladies, so Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke will definitely be back as Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey for one last hurrah. But who will be joining them? Expect to see the following:

• Ali Skovbye as teenage Tully
• Roan Curtis as teenage Kate
• Ben Lawson as Johnny Ryan
• Beau Garrett as Cloud
• Yael Yurman as Marah Ryan
• Ignacio Serricchio as Danny Diaz

New additions to season two also included India de Beaufort as Charlotte, Greg Germann as Benedict, and Jolene Purdy as Justine – so expect to see them in part 2 as well.

Firefly Lane season 2 part 2 plot: What will the second season be about?

The first season ended with an unexplained rift between Kate and Tully in which Kate forbade her best friend from attending her father's funeral – but season two finally revealed the reason behind the argument.

Tully had been looking after Kate's daughter, Marah, and let her go out when she was supposed to be grounded. After a boy at a frat party took things too far, Marah asked Tully (who had been drinking) to come pick her up, but they end up in hospital after another vehicle collides with theirs on the way home.

Even though Tully wasn't at fault for the accident and neither were seriously injured, Kate is understandably upset, leading to their major fall out.

Despite initially rejecting Tully's attempts to make amends, Part 1 concludes with Kate turning up at Tully's apartment after learning that she's been diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer, only to find out that Tully has just left for a work trip in Antarctica.

Naturally, fans are now wondering what this diagnosis means for Kate and whether she and Tully will ever repair their friendship. Considering the show is based on a novel, we have the answer for you right here.

Warning: Major book spoilers for part two ahead, so stop reading here if you don't want the ending spoiled.

In a devastating turn of events, Kate is told her cancer is terminal. When Tully learns of the news, she rushes back home to Kate and the pair mend their friendship before Kate passes away. Just rip our hearts out from our chests while you're at it, Netflix.

"Season 1 created a lot of questions and then season 2, part 1 answered those, and now there's a lot more questions and all of those will be answered in the second half, Chalke told EW.

"But there's also lots of levity. One thing I love about the show is that there's a balance between the heavy stuff and then there's some humor woven in there, which I think is what you need so that you can actually exhale."

"This story was intimidating. I didn't know what that was going feel like to play her journey. I can't tell you obviously how it ends, you'll have to watch and see, but everybody's lives have been touched by cancer."

"My aunt and my grandmother, we lost to cancer and lots of the crew members opened up to me about their stories and shared their stories with me. So playing that scene and other ones to come, you are looking into the eyes of all these people you've gotten to know quite well and, and know what they've been through. So there was definitely some emotional days on the set."

While Hannah's follow-up novel Fly Away explores the impact Kate's death has on Tully, Johnny and Marah and would be make for a good third season, Chalke has stated that the show was never intended to go beyond the first book or season two.

She told Deadline: "This was always Maggie’s decision to arc this storyline. Basically, the arc follows the storyline of the book, and then it also goes off into brand new directions as well.

"That was the plan to know how many episodes it was going to be done over so that the story could be told in its entirety. There was no waiting on finding out if there’s a pickup or not, and then [the story] is left halfway told, it was the completion of their journey."

Chalke continued: "I don’t want to let anyone know where it’s going but it’s really moving, and it’s really emotional. I thought it was beautifully written, and it still has a real balance. Just like season one, part one, you’re still going into the '70s, you still have the '80s and '90s. There’s moments of levity, humor and pain."

"It’s one of the parts that I loved so much about playing this role, and what I’m really gonna miss is — no two days were the same. There’s one day where you’re singing, dancing and running around in your nylons. And the next day you’re doing a really challenging scene in front of an elevator. With a mix of playing the 80s and the 90s, you can never open a script and go, ‘Oh, that’s something I’ve done before’."

But brace yourself for an emotional farewell.

"It’s gonna be really moving. Also so much humor and pain; it’s going to make you laugh, it’s going to make you cry. You are going to get answers to all of your questions that you’re left with. And I hope that you are going to love it."
