Firelands Electric announces 'Lunch with a Lineman' electrical safety contest

May 16—NEW LONDON — As part of National Electrical Safety Month, Firelands Electric is sponsoring a new contest for children who live in a home receiving power from the cooperative.

Linemen often face challenging and dangerous situations to ensure that homes, farms and businesses receive safe, reliable power. They work near high- voltage equipment on a regular basis, so to protect themselves, linemen wear special protective gear.

To help teach Firelands' younger co-op members about the importance of this safety equipment, the cooperative is sponsoring a contest for children in kindergarten through fifth grade to learn how each piece of linemen's safety gear is used.

To enter, students should submit a completed contest form, using the supplied word bank to identify the safety equipment pictured. Entries will be accepted through June 9 and may be returned by mailing them to: Safety Contest, Firelands Electric Cooperative, P.O. Box 32, New London, Ohio 44851. Entries may also be dropped off at the co-op office or emailed to members@firelandsec.com. Blank entry forms are available in the May issue of Ohio Cooperative Living magazine, at the co-op office, and on Firelands' website at www.firelandsec.com/contests.

Children who correctly identify at least six of the eight pieces of safety equipment will have their names entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three spots for a special behind-the-scenes look at electric utility equipment and lunch with a Firelands lineman. Winners will be featured on the cooperative's social media and in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Complete contest rules are available at www.firelandsec.com/contests. If you have any questions regarding the Lunch with a Lineman contest, please contact the member services department at 1- 800-533-8658.
