Firestone wins City Series cross country titles; Copley earns SLAC girls soccer crown

Firestone wins City Series titles:Nate Julien, Soraya Ledley lead Falcons to cross country success at Goodyear Heights Metro Park

CROSS COUNTRY

Firestone continued its dominance in cross country over its City Series rivals Wednesday in the annual league championship meet at Goodyear Heights Metro Park in Akron.

Senior Nate Julien and sophomore Soraya Ledley crossed the finish line first in the boys and girls races, respectively, to guide the Falcons.

Julien completed the 3.1-mile course in a time of 16:39 and Ledley compiled a time of 22:42.

Wednesday's victory for Julien marked the second year in a row that he conquered Goodyear and its steep hill to win the City Series boys title.

"Both teams have been incredible all season," Firestone first-year coach Sara Schaefer said. "... This is a great group of kids and it has been such a fun season working with them. I am really glad I got this opportunity."

Senior Quinn Hopkins finished second in 17:43 for the Firestone boys, which scored 18 points, and won their 20th league title in a row and 21st in 22 seasons.

Buchtel senior James Nelloms finished third in the boys race and led the Griffins to second in the team standings with 51 points.

Firestone freshman Elijah Dunlap, junior Nicholas Cribbet, junior David Burkholder and junior Braylon Peets finished 4-5-6-7.

Buchtel junior Jameson Decatur, Firestone senior Sean Feeney and Buchtel junior QiMarreon Marks rounded out the top 10 in the boys race.

Freshman Sarah Schueler finished second in 22:45 for the Firestone girls, which finished with 19 points and won their ninth league title in a row. Firestone sophomore Reese Brady was third.

Buchtel junior Sandra King finished fourth in the girls race and led the Griffins to second in the team standings with 37 points.

Firestone senior Maryrose LaVictoire, Buchtel sophomore Akaliya White, North sophomore Kretina Rai, Buchtel junior Tianna Burton, Firestone junior Lauren Mitchell and North freshman Marely Morales rounded out the top 10 in the girls race.

GIRLS SOCCER

Copley 6, Highland 0

Senior Emma Stransky scored three goals and had one assist to lead Copley (15-0-1, 7-0-0) to a victory in its regular season finale and the Suburban League American Conference championship.

Senior Ashley Kerekes contributed one goal and one assist for Copley, the No. 1 ranked team in the Division II state coaches poll.

Copley junior Kate Young and freshman Maddie Luecke each had a goal, and senior Allie Arnold, senior Gabby Niemczura and junior Emily Kerekes had one assist apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Kami Ayoup made five saves and compiled her 15th shutout in a row with the help of backline seniors Gabby Niemczura, Megan Brewer, and juniors Colleen Bauer and Sydney Leach.

“This group is by far the most cohesive unit we’ve ever fielded at Copley," Copley coach Wally Senk said. "They genuinely care for one another, are always positive and encouraging, and support each others individual accomplishments as a team. They’re determined, rely on each other and sacrifice for one another. As the old [Muhammad] Ali saying goes: 'champions have to have the skill and the will, but the will must be stronger than the skill.'"

Copley outscored its opponents 90-1 in the regular season.

Senk also lauded his assistants, Hannah Seeman Garrison (2011 Copley graduate) and Brooke Brenner Moran (2015 Copley graduate) as "awesome coaches."

"Both Hannah and Brooke played here at Copley and know what it means to bleed blue and gold," Senk said. "Their groups laid the foundation for the girls that came after them.”

Copley finished with an edge in shots on goal (14-5) and corner kicks (5-1).

Hailey Trzaska made eight saves for Highland (12-3-1, 6-1-0).

Ellet 8, North 1

One night after their male counterparts fell to the Vikings, Ellet girls soccer made sure there would be no repeat. The Orangemen rolled to a big win over the Vikings to improve to 15-2.

Ellet got hat tricks from both Sydney Tucker and Jelena Strbac, as well as two goals from Charisma Smith. The Orangemen finished with a 14-7 edge in shots on goal.

Manchester 9, Tuslaw 1

Katie Norris scored three goals and Lauren Gunsett and Gina Tipton contributed two goals apiece to lead visiting Manchester (16-1, 12-0 PAC-7) to a win.

Rowan Olechnowicz and Asia Stanton also scored a goal for the Panthers.

CVCA 6, Triway 0

The Royals left no doubt in their regular-season finale, routing the Titans at home. CVCA (11-4-2) overwhelmed Triway, finishing with a 34-4 edge in shots on goal and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Royals got two goals from senior Cara Raymer in the win. while Bree Haver, Madi Solomon, Claire Pheneger and Hannah Coons each scored once.
