Firework sales continue for 4th of July: Here's where to buy in Lubbock

Ready to light up the sky for 4th of July? Firework sales officially began last Friday and continue through Monday, so the A-J has compiled a list of where to buy them in the Lubbock area.

However, even though they're legal and available this year, most firework products are not legal to use in the city limits.

Last week, city of Lubbock and Lubbock County officials shared with the A-J reminders for the public about laws and safety guidelines to keep in mind when celebrating America's independence with pyrotechnics.

Popping off fireworks inside Lubbock city limits is against city ordinance, said Taren Perkins, a spokeswoman for Lubbock Fire Rescue.

Violation of the fireworks ordinance could result in a citation from the fire marshal or other law enforcement, and a $1,000 fine for each offense, according to the city.

While fireworks are illegal in the city, Lubbock County will have no restrictions on the sale or use of fireworks this year, thanks to recent moisture, according to the A-J's story last week.

On Thursday, the Lubbock Police Department announced it is launching a new online reporting site for residents to let police know about fireworks being used illegally in the city.

In the unincorporated parts of the county where fireworks are legal to use, residents should also keep in mind common courtesy when using fireworks - including the potential to frighten animals, cause stress to people suffering from PTSD. And every year, Lubbock County officials urge people to pick up after themselves when using fireworks.

This year, thanks to recent rainfall, Lubbock County is not under a burn ban that would further limit the sale of fireworks.

Clinton Thetford, Lubbock County's emergency management coordinator, told the A-J last week that while there are currently no bans, there are still rules about where fireworks can be used. People enjoying fireworks are not allowed to shoot them from roadways or ditches, he said.
