While many people are preparing to light off their own fireworks at home this weekend, Brighton Area Fire Marshal Rick Boisvert said that when it comes to consumer fireworks, the best advice he can give is, "Don't do it."

Boisvert said just because they're legal doesn't mean they aren't dangerous, and the dry conditions this summer add to the risk.

"Our recommendation is that you don't launch them when it's this dry out," he said.

However, if people do decide to set off fireworks, there are some ways to stay safe, he said.

When launching, Boisvert said, it's important to keep a hose or a bucket of water nearby. If a firework is a dud, don't try to re-light it, instead soak it in water.

All fireworks canisters should be soaked in water before disposing of them.

There are also some rules to follow regarding consumer fireworks.

People setting off fireworks can't be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, and must be 18 or older.

Fireworks must be launched from private property and must remain over private property, unless permission is obtained from other property owners.

People in Brighton can set off fireworks from Sunday through Tuesday, until 11:45 p.m. each night. Times are enforced by the City of Brighton Police Department.

Fowlerville, Howell and Hartland follow the state statute for fireworks, which allows them from Wednesday through Monday, after 11 a.m. and until 11:45 p.m. each day.
