Fireworks could be heard for miles around Holton after fire destroys metal storehouse

The sound of fireworks discharging could be heard miles away early Sunday as a raging blaze destroyed a metal building containing fireworks at a corner of 192th and US-75 highway south of Holton in Jackson County, said Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which was reported at 3:30 a.m., he said.

The fire's cause was undetermined and under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office, Morse said.

"The structure is a complete loss," he said.

A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.

No people had been in the building, which Morse said "has housed fireworks and had been used as a fireworks provider over the years."

The Holton, Hoyt, Mayetta, Delia, Netawaka, Whiting and Prairie Band Potawatomi National fire departments responded to the scene, as did Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Prairie Band National Potawatomi Police Department, Morse said.

Firefighters remained at the scene until dawn, he said.
