Fireworks and parades; fatal shooting arraignment: Top 5 stories last week

BROCKTON — The annual Fourth of July celebration in Bridgewater kicked off with a festive parade, followed by the arts and music festival, carnival and more, concluding with a fireworks show at Legion Field.

Middleboro also held a Fourth of July carnival complete with fireworks at Pierce Park.

Malik Cotton, the third of the three suspects charged with murdering 16-year-old Leidson Monteiro-Terry, turned himself in to the Brockton District Court, where he was later arraigned.

West Bridgewater Cops and Teens Sports Camp for grades 3 to 8 is underway at the Middle-Senior High School. Police and high school athletes mentor younger athletes, encouraging teamwork, self-motivation and drive.

One of Massachusetts' most highly-touted football recruits in recent memory is Thayer Academy's Samson Okunlola. For now, the 6-foot-5, 305-pound offensive tackle from Brockton has trimmed his list of where he’ll attend college down to nine universities.

Third suspect in murder of Brockton teen turns himself in

Malik Cotton, the third of the three suspects charged with murdering 16-year-old Leidson Monteiro-Terry, turned himself in to the Brockton District Court Tuesday where he was later arraigned, the Plymouth County district attorney's office said.  Cotton, 21, was arraigned on one count each of murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon and shooting a firearm within 500 feet of a building, the DA's office said. He pled not guilty and is being held without bail.

The annual Fourth of July celebration in Bridgewater kicked off with a festive parade, followed by the arts and music festival with  face painting, train rides, games and live performances, and a kid-friendly carnival, concluding with a fireworks show at Legion Field.

Brockton paraprofessionals rally for higher wages

With more than 100 people outside chanting and holding signs reading "it's time you support us," Stacy MacDonald, president of the Brockton Education Support Professionals Association, entered the office of the Brockton Public Schools headquarters. MacDonald and her team met with BPS officials to negotiate higher starting wages for educational support professionals in the school district. It was the third meeting since June 13 where members of Brockton Education Support Professionals Association (BESPA) tried to negotiate wages with the administration, and a crowd of people stood outside the building to express their support for the paraprofessionals.

West Bridgewater Cops and Teens Sports Camp kicks it up a notch

West Bridgewater police Lt. Timothy Nixon is the camp director at the West Bridgewater Cops and Teens Sports Camp at West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School. The free sports and conditioning camp for grades 3 to 8 runs through July 28. West Bridgewater police and high school athletes mentor younger athletes, encouraging teamwork, self-motivation and drive.

Shooting near Randolph club kills Worcester man

Local and State Police are investigating a Monday night shooting that left a Worcester man dead and seriously injured another near a club in Randolph.  Randolph police responded to a reported shooting at about 8 p.m. Monday, July 4, in a parking area near  Mojitos Country Club, a Latin-themed entertainment complex, on Mazzeo Drive, Norfolk County District Attorney Michel Morrissey's office said.
